Recently retired New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski has received an open invitation to join World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).
WWE chief brand officer Stephanie McMahon told TMZ Sports (via Pro Football Talk's Darin Gantt) on April 6 she would love to have Gronkowski on board.
“Anybody who has a real big personality. I'd love to have Gronk in the ring. Conor McGregor, huge personality.
It's really about bringing in the biggest personalities with the best athletic ability.”
TMZ Sports also asked McMahon if WWE and Gronkowski have been having conversations. McMahon replied in the affirmative.
Gronkowski's wrestling friend, Mojo Rawley, told TMZ Sports in February, “It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when” when asked about the former's possible career as a wrestler.
If Gronkowski does accept the WWE's invitation, he joins the likes of Ronda Rousey as retired athletes who became wrestlers.
Aside from wrestling, acting is another possible post-football-retirement career option for Gronkowski.
This was what a source told CNHI Sports Boston's Bill Burt on February 6. More specifically, famous actors Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Sylvester Stallone told Gronkowski he could strike it rich by starring in action films.
The 29-year-old Gronkowski announced his retirement from the NFL on March 25. He told ESPN New England Patriots reporter Mike Reiss the wear and tear of nine NFL seasons has caught up with him.
“The season is a grind. It's up and down. I'm not going to lie and sit there and say every week is the best. Not at all. You go up. You go down. You can take some serious hits.
Try to imaging getting hit all the time and trying to be where you want to be every day in life. It's tough. It's difficult. To take hits to the thigh, to take hits to your head, abusing your body, isn't what your brain wants. When your body is abused, it can bring down your mood.
You have to be able to deal with that, too, throughout the season. You have to be able to deal with that going into games.”
If Gronk does become a wrestler, it seems he still has a lot left in the tank. His body has endured hundreds of hits he's taken from defenders in football. Wrestling is a punishing sport. If there was one guy who can give the fans their money's worth, it's Gronk.
Gronkowski is a three-time Super Bowl champion and five-time Pro Bowl selection. He finished his storied NFL career with 7,861 yards and 79 touchdowns on 521 receptions.
