In his first campaign in the league with the New England Patriots, rookie running back Sony Michel has continued to make a tremendous impact in the offense through the running game.
This has become more increasingly obvious with each passing week as he has grown more comfortable with his role in the game plan. It is something that Michel recently acknowledged stating that his confidence has been key to helping him continue to be a big factor on the field, according to Doug Kyed of NESN.
“Yeah, because I know my assignment,” Michel said. “When I’m confident in what I’m doing, I can go out there and just play.”
Michel has continued to prove to be a huge asset in the offense as their primary factor in the running game as he has tallied a team-best 586 rushing yards with five touchdowns despite missing three games due to injury. He has an opportunity to potentially become the franchise's sixth 1,000 rusher under head coach Bill Belichick if he's about to pick up his play over the final games of the season. He is already on pace to tally 852 rushing yards with seven touchdowns.
Beyond that, Michel has quickly shown that he could be a long-term part of the franchise as a centerpiece in the backfield while providing a huge amount of stability to the offense. In the eight games that he has played this season, he has rushed for this season, he has tallied more than 100 rushing yards three times while scoring a touchdown four times. His performance on the field has been huge in helping make up in the areas that star quarterback Tom Brady hasn't this campaign as he has had some notable drop off in production.
Michel has a chance in front of him to continue to be a major factor in the offense while helping the Patriots to compete for a Super Bowl this season.
