It seems like it was only yesterday that former New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz took the NFL by storm. Despite his recent hiatus from the league, Cruz insists that his playing days are not over.
The 2017 season came and went with Cruz playing the part of a spectator. However, he is adamant about giving the NFL another shot come next season, according to Ryan Dunleavy of NJ Advance Media:
“I'm not retired just yet,” Cruz said by phone from the Super Bowl. “I'm going to give it one more shot and see what's out there, see what's in the market for me and if I can get into anybody's camp. If not, we'll see where it goes after that and take the necessary steps.”
It is not as if the opportunities were not there. The Giants suffered improbable losses to their wide receiving corps early on in the year. However, Cruz never got the call to return to New York.
“Naturally, I was surprised, being that I knew the offense and was just there a few months ago at that point,” Cruz said. “I was a little bit surprised just as a normal human being just as everybody else I came across was surprised as they (said) to me everywhere I go.”
Cruz is the product of one of the most inspiring underdog stories in recent history. He enjoyed tremendous success with the Giants, having registered 303 receptions for 4,549 yards and 25 touchdowns in 70 games.
However, it seems the strife between him and former head coach Ben McAdoo was too much to bear at the time. As a result, Cruz is still waiting for what could be his last opportunity to continue his unlikely football career.
