The New York Giants are off to yet another slow start out of the gate, dropping three of their first four games to put them in an early rut.
Much of the criticism has been levied toward quarterback Eli Manning for the team's shortcomings offensively. In response to that, Hall of Famer Brett Favre came to the defense of Manning during an interview with SiriusXM Radio, voicing that the Giants haven't provided him with the necessary protection to succeed under center. “The way he plays the game has not changed,” Favre said on SiriusXM Radio. “You have to protect him. He's not going to win with his feet. Every once in a while he may scramble, but he is what he is. When you can protect him, he's really good. I think his demeanor, personality, and physical attributes really haven't changed. I think it's up to the team to provide him, and I know that they've tried their best, to provide him with adequate protection. You have to figure out a way to protect the guy. You can't say alright Eli now we expect you to move around and make plays because we don't think we can protect you well.”
The Giants possess one of the league's least productive offenses, ranking 29th with 18.3 points per game, 23rd in total offense and 19th in the passing game. Manning's struggles have been at the forefront despite completing 74.2 percent of his passes, as he has thrown just four touchdown passes.
New York largely struggled to provide Manning with the necessary protection last season, which is an issue the front office had hoped to address in the 2018 campaign. However, the team has fallen in that same hole, which has been compounded with starting center Jon Halapio being out for the year with a broken ankle.
If the Giants hope to claw back into the playoff picture, it will require them to vastly improve offensively over the rest of the season.
