The Giants and Daniel Jones are part of this story: Former NFL quarterback and current NBC football analyst Chris Simms was willing to eat some crow about some of his past evaluations.
Simms said earlier this week he was wrong about New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones, who he apparently criticized after the Giants took Jones in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft (via Dan Benton of USA TODAY):
“Yes, I crapped on him during the draft process and he crapped on me repeatedly during the 2019 season and said, ‘you’re wrong Chris Simms.’ And I am. I was wrong. I misevaluated him in the draft,” said Simms. “Listen, I’m not going to lie. I fell into a trap that I told myself I wouldn’t fall into before. … A little bit like Dak Prescott where I put some of the struggles of the team and the offense and Daniel Jones maybe not being the sexiest guy to watch at times. I put all of those problems on him and that wasn’t fair coming out of Duke.
“What we saw last year was a guy that was thrown into the lineup and from Day 1 — the running game’s not great, Saquon Barkley is not 100 percent, we don’t have a ton of talent at receiver — but Daniel (Jones), we’d like you to carry the offense. He had some really bright moments last year.”
Daniel Jones actually won his first start of the season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 3, throwing for 336 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for the game-winning score.
The rest of the season was more of a struggle.
Jones went 2-9 over the course of the next 11 games, throwing for just over 3,000 yards and 24 touchdowns against 12 interceptions. The “bright moments” Simms alluded to were there, though Jones also fumbled a league-high 18 times.
However, the hope in New York is improved play from the offensive play and a healthier Saquon Barkley will serve to benefit Jones' benefit in his sophomore season. At the very least, Jones seems to have made a believer of Simms.
