Eli Manning is still a quarterback for the New York Giants, but there are rumors flying around that he’s probably taken his last snap for the franchise. Even with a year still left on his current contract, it’s possible that Manning will leave the team via the retirement route.
That being said, and despite the disastrous season the Giants just had, the team seems to find Manning as a still reliable signal-caller, someone they deem has yet to manifest any significant signs of slowing down, according to Paul Schwartz of The New York Post.
Eli Manning is not expected to go anywhere. It is believed Gettleman and Shurmur are convinced the 38-year-old can function as a more-than-competent NFL quarterback, and they greatly value his professionalism, attention to detail, calm demeanor and ability to process information and relay it to his teammates. Upon detailed film study of the entire season, no alarming signs were uncovered to reveal regression in his physical skills, no category of throws he can no longer make.
This doesn’t entirely mean that the Giants will not search for Manning’ successor in the offseason. Although the 2019 NFL Draft appears to thinner than usual in terms of talent, particularly at the quarterback position, the likes of Dwayne Haskins (Ohio State), Daniel Jones (Duke), Drew Lock (Missouri), and Kyler Murray (Oklahoma) are some of the names the Giants could consider to take and groom as Manning’s eventual replacement.
The 38-year-old Manning finished his 2018 NFL campaign with 4,299 passing yards, 21 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions – third fewest in a season in his career — on a 66.0 completion percentage – higher than his career number of 60.3 percent.
