The New York Giants have their next head coach in former Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur.

It was a thorough selection process, and general manager Dave Gettleman strongly believes that Shurmur is the right person for the job because of his maturity to handle the mental rigors that come with the territory.

From Calvin Watkins of Newsday:

“He’s an adult,” Gettleman said. “He’s mature. He’s got wisdom. He’s very even-keeled and his demeanor really pays off. I’ve watched him on the sidelines. He doesn’t get shook. He doesn’t get rattled. This is a job for a grownup. We’re halfway through the interview, and I wrote down in my notes, ‘This is an adult.’ Everybody wants the next wiz-bang kid. Let me tell you something: You look at history and see how that’s worked out. This is a veteran, seasoned professional football coach.”

One of the primary tasks for Shurmur in his first year will be resolving the major offensive issues that came about this past season. He is coming off a successful stint as the offensive coordinator with the Vikings, helping them become one of the league's top scoring and most balanced offenses. They rank 10th with 23.9 points per game, seventh with 122.3 rushing yards per contest, and 11th with 234.6 passing yards per game.
Shurmur has a proven group to work with led by quarterback Eli Manning and star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. There are also some other viable pieces in the passing game, such as Brandon Marshall, Evan Engram, and Sterling Shepard, who the Giants hope to translate into a dynamic offensive unit. They'll also look to made key roster additions this offseason; the Giants hold the second overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
This is a fresh situation for Shurmur, but it's clear that is plenty of pressure on him to quickly turn around the team next season.
