Ever since Joe Judge accepted the head coaching job for the New York Giants, fans have been anxious to see what he thinks of Daniel Jones. During his press conference at the NFL Combine, Judge spoke about Jones' status with New York.
Similarly to his introductory press conference, Judge refused to mention players by name. When he was asked about Jones as his quarterback, the first-year head coach declined to refer to him as the team's starting quarterback.
“I’m not going to establish any status or hierarchy within the player or position groups by spending a month talking about individuals,” Judge said, via Tom Rock of Newsday. “That’s important to me.”
Following his comments, Judge did clarify that he understands that his remarks could be viewed as a lack of confidence in Jones. However, Judge would then state that the players on the roster will realize the support they receive in the future.
Seeing that Jones is entering his second season in the NFL and was hand-picked by GM Dave Gettleman, he'll be under center in 2020. Nevertheless, Judge doesn't want Jones to get in the mindset of believing everything is handed to him.
In his rookie campaign, Jones exceeded expectations as he threw for 3,027 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. The Duke product did have a fumbling issue that needs to be addressed in the offseason.
With the retirement of Eli Manning, the Giants are now Jones' team for the foreseeable future. While Jones is going to be the starter, Judge wants him to prove why the franchise should be confident in him moving forward.
