The New York Giants are in pursuit of free agent linebacker Blake Martinez, most recently of the Green Bay Packers, per NJ.com's Matt Lombardo.

Martinez, 26, is a former fourth-round pick of the Packers from the 2016 NFL Draft and appeared in the last 48 regular-season games for Green Bay, recording 97 solo tackles this past season along with five tackles for losses, three quarterback hits, and one interception.

Per Lombardo, there is “significant interest” between the Standford Cardinal product Martinez and Giants general manager Dave Gettleman.

Additionally, as the NFL's free agency opened on Monday, March 16, the Giants are pursuing free-agent defensive players in former Seahawks edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney, Jets linebacker Jordan Jenkins, and Rams linebacker Cory Littleton.

The Giants started free agency by placing the franchise tag on defensive tackle Leonard Williams today—a polarizing move given the short volume of work Williams has put in as a member of the G-Men. Williams, 26, was traded mid-season in 2019 between the two MetLife Stadium tenants, Jets and Giants, appearing in eight games for the latter and only registering 13 solo tackles and 0.5 sacks.

Williams is a first-round talent, with Gang Green taking the USC product sixth overall in 2015 but has not contributed in meaningful metrics like sacks and QB hits.

Nevertheless, the Giants are attempting to beef up their defense with the addition of Martinez or other linebacker targets. Martinez portends to be a nice addition in free agency should New York seal the deal.

Despite lacking accolades to his resume like Pro Bowl selections, Martinez has been a fierce presence for Green Bay's defense these last few years.
