The New York Giants are expected to sign kicker Graham Gano, pending the results of his physical and COVID-19 tests, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

The Carolina Panthers released Gano last month after he spent all of last season sidelined with a leg injury. Gano had two years left on a four-year, $17 million contract. Before his eight seasons with the Panthers, he had stints with the Baltimore Ravens and the Washington Football Team.

Gano, 33, has been a fairly accurate kicker over the course of his career, making 82.1 percent of his 273 career field goal attempts. Furthermore, of his 686 kickoffs, 63.7 have resulted in touchbacks. In the 2018 NFL campaign, which was the last season Gano kicked before coming to the Giants, he made 14 of 16 field goals.

The Florida State product was also named a Pro Bowler in the 2017 season and was also the Panthers' kicker during their Super Bowl 50 trip in 2015, making two of three kicks in the championship game.

Nevertheless, the Giants desperately needed a veteran kicker after parting ways with Pro Bowl kicker Aldrick Rosas, who was charged in an alleged hit-and-run traffic accident while driving with a suspended license in California.

After the Giants released Rosas, they quickly signed Chandler Catanzaro. Gano is expected to compete with Catanzaro for the starting job. Catanzaro retired during the 2019 season; however, he's attempting to make a comeback this season.

The Giants are scheduled to play their first regular season game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 14; however, fans aren't expected to be in attendance.
