New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur just finished his first season as the team's head coach and although the Giants had a very disappointing season, Shurmur is not hitting the panic button.
Giants coach Pat Shurmur on @WFAN660: "I think we're much closer to winning than we were last year at this time. I feel good about the direction that we're going. Yeah, I think we're close."

The Giants have a potential powerhouse on the offensive side of the ball, but New York let some good talent go defense with players like Damon Harrison and Eli Apple. However, the defense has not been the most questionable unit for the Giants considering how much the offensive line struggled this season.
Shurmur is a great offensive minded coach, but it's obvious the team needs to address the defense and make retaining players like Landon Collins and Alec Ogletree a priority. Collins may choose to walk considering he will likely demand a hefty paycheck and if the Giants lose him as well, they are in trouble going forward facing a massive rebuild.
If Shurmur can focus his attention to the offensive line and attain some defensive help, the Giants are definitely talented enough to make noise in the league next season. The team's success is centered heavily around the quarterback position as well pending Eli Manning retains his starting quarterback job. Shurmur has proven to be behind his players all season and they seem to support the direction he is headed toward so the future may be very bright for the Giants.
New York's offense was rejuvenated with rookie running back Saquon Barkley and it's likely Shurmur had a lot to do in deciding to draft Barkley. The offense is good enough, however if the Giants hope to be great they'll need to make smart draft picks and be active in free agency.
