The New York Giants passed up the chance to take their quarterback of the future with the No. 2 pick in the NFL Draft. As a result, they will have to go with 37-year-old Eli Manning as their starter for the foreseeable future.

That setup seems to suit new Giants head coach Pat Shurmur just fine, though. He doesn’t see Manning’s age as an issue and believes he can still play at a very high level.

“No, I didn’t see the age,” Shurmur said per Albert Breer of SI. “There’s no substitute for experience and he’s got it. So no, the age doesn’t bother me. … My belief in Eli is in being a pro coach that’s competed against him. And then you wanna touch the paint to see if it’s wet. And my experience with him to this point tells me he still has a chance to play at a very high level.”

Manning is coming off a down season in 2017 as the Giants won fewer than six games for the first time since he was a rookie. But instead of trying to replace him, New York decided to add pieces around the veteran QB to give him a better chance to succeed.

They’re hoping a revamped offensive line, an immediate impact from No. 2 pick Saquon Barkley, and a full season from star wideout Odell Beckham Jr. can bring out the best in the 37-year-old. But with untested quarterbacks behind him on the depth chart, the Giants almost have no choice but to believe Manning can get back to his best this season.
