After a string of injuries and the poor field situation in Winnipeg, the conversation surrounding preseason length in the NFL has never been louder. According to Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, the league is in constant discussion about what to do with the preseason, and how to make it more enjoyable for fans in the process.
“We are evaluating,” Jones said (via Pro Football Talk). “I’m involved in our labor negotiation and we’re having CBA negotiations every Monday and Tuesday. Have been for several weeks. We all — players, the league — are looking at preseason and looking at what we can do to make preseason better for our fans.”
Jones went on to say that while he finds the preseason exciting, he knows there are many fans that simply don’t.
Because of this, the league is trying to figure out how to make it more enjoyable while also not risking injuries for players.

But the bottom line is that everybody knows that at the end of the day, it’s my town against yours and we want to see competing right down to the last down and so getting there with [the] preseason doesn’t happen. So we’re taking a look at it. . . . It has been a subject of evaluating, looking at, critiquing since I’ve been in the league for 30 years.”
With many NFL teams simply opting to hold out star players or any starters from most preseason action, it’s certainly interesting to see how the league goes about tweaking things. While some want to see the preseason done away with completely, it’s hard to see the NFL going that far.
Regardless, most agree that something should change, and it'll be up to the NFL to decide what soon.
