The Washington Redskins are currently in the midst of a disastrous start to the 2019 NFL season. Fortunately, there has been some good news regarding the progression of quarterback Alex Smith.

Smith has spent the year recovering from a devastating broken leg. Interim head coach Bill Callahan provided an encouraging update on his rehab process, via Les Carpenter of the Washington Post.

“He’s been throwing for some time now. I think it’s been a progression that he’s built up,” interim coach Bill Callahan said. “He hasn’t just come out there and started throwing 50-yard bombs.”

Callahan offered up some high praise for how Smith has gone about dealing with the injury.

“He’s working diligently on the road to rehab and trying to get himself back to 100 percent,” Callahan said. “I have never seen anything like the effort he’s pouring into his rehab. It’s so impressive. . . . He’s got the ultimate respect of all of us.

There is certainly plenty of truth to Callahan's comments. Regardless of whether or not Smith is able to make his return in the future, the fact that he has made tremendous strides in his recovery is still a positive sign considering he had suffered numerous setbacks throughout the process.

The veteran has been optimistic about being able to play again. However, it remains to be seen if Washington will be the destination he makes his return. Although it may not be the most ideal place to spur a comeback with all the turmoil surrounding the franchise, the prospect of Smith sticking around as a stabilizing factor for the team does not seem too far-fetched.
