In the coming weeks, Pro Bowl quarterback Kirk Cousins could have a major decision on his hands concerning his long-term future with the Washington Redskins.

According to Jamey Eisenberg of CBS Sports, Cousins voiced that he desires to remain in D.C. while acknowledging it could be entirely out of his control.

The Redskins have ultimate control over the situation with the option to offer him the franchise tag for the third straight year, but would have to be comfortable with committing more than $30 million in salary for the 2018 campaign. This scenario would also allow for the front office to have an extended window through Jul. 16 at 4 p.m. ET to work out a new long-term deal with Cousins. The Redskins could choose to use this designation beginning on Feb. 20. through Mar. 6.

That said, Cousins clearly is open to whatever presents itself one the offseason begins if he is able to hit the open market. There are several teams in need of a viable starter quarterback such as Denver Broncos, New York Jets, Cleveland Browns, Buffalo Bills, and Arizona Cardinals. Cousins has already been linked to the Broncos and Browns over the last couple of weeks.

With the likes of Drew Brees and Jimmy Garropolo expected to remain with their respective teams, it could leave the 29-year-old as likely the most sought out quarterback on the open market. He has proven to be a dependable starting quarterback having thrown for more than 4,000 yards with at least 25 touchdowns and a passer rating above 90 in each campaign over the last three years.

During the 2017 campaign, he threw for 4,093 yards on 64.3 percent completion rate with 27 touchdown passes with 13 interceptions, and 93.9 passer rating. This saw him finish eighth in touchdown passes, ninth in completion percentage, and seventh in total passing yards.

Ultimately, this is still an extremely fluid situation that could have a major impact on several other teams aside from the Redskins.
