The New England Patriots are designated as the “home” team for Super Bowl LII in Minnesota against the Philadelphia Eagles. However, they have opted to wear their white away jerseys instead of the blue jerseys which they normally wear at Gillette Stadium.

If recent history is any indication, that decision may just result in New England winning the Super Bowl. That’s because the Patriots have won all three Super Bowls under Bill Belichick where they’ve worn those white jerseys.

Skeptics and more rational thinkers will be quick to dismiss that stat as mere chance. However, the Pats’ success wearing their white jerseys in the Super Bowl is actually part of a larger trend which has spanned over a decade.

Of the last 13 teams that have gone to win the Super Bowl, 12 of them have worn white. Funnily enough, that streak began back when the Pats beat the Eagles in 2005.

Of course, it shouldn’t be considered too much of a shock if New England continues that curious run of success for teams in white. The Patriots opened as the biggest Super Bowl betting favorite since 2009 and are expected to beat the Eagles.

Although, it should be noted that five of the last six Super Bowl favorites have actually lost the Super Bowl. The lone exception, of course, was the Patriots last season, who made the greatest comeback of all-time against the Atlanta Falcons to win that fifth Lombardi Trophy.

Did the fact that they were wearing their lucky white jerseys play any part in that? No one knows for sure. But if the Pats do something similar against the Eagles, then it might be time to take the wearing white in the Super Bowl thing more seriously.
