After being one of the most dominant teams in the NFC over the last half-decade or so, the Seattle Seahawks have started to clean house and appear to be in a rebuilding process. The NFC West's elite have been the team to beat with lockdown defense and a talented young quarterback in Russell Wilson, but things have drastically changed in Seattle with the team parting ways with a lot of their core players.
Although the team has parted ways with Michael Bennett and Richard Sherman, Seahawks general manager John Schneider insists Seattle is not rebuilding during an appearance on Brock and Salk on 710 ESPN Seattle, transcription via Stacy Rost.
“It’s a constant reset every single year, it doesn’t stop,” Schneider said. “When I say ‘reset’ people are like, ‘Well it’s a rebuild.’ We’re not rebuilding; it’s just a reset. We’ve got some pretty good players on this football team. And there’s a lot of young players that people don’t necessarily – they haven’t heard their names yet. I remember going through this when we traded Josh Wilson, and Kelly Jennings and Marcus Trufant were here. And nobody knew who Byron Maxwell, and Richard Sherman, and Walter Thurmond were.”
Despite two of the team's leaders on defense now suiting up elsewhere and potentially more moves to be made by Schneider before the offseason is through for Seattle, the general manager wants the diehard fans of the Seahawks franchise to trust the process, via Rost.
“I’m telling you man, there’s a lot of good young football players that people don’t know about. Tedric Thompson was one of our best special teams players this last year. He didn’t get to play much at strong safety. Kam [Chancellor] was one of our best special teams players the first year he played. He didn’t get to play strong safety because Lawyer [Milloy] was here. Trust the process, man.”
Schneider's plea is easier said than done as it appears to be pretty obvious the team is going through a transition period that could result in some rough years ahead. To make matters even worse for Seattle, the Los Angeles Rams look like legitimate Super Bowl title contenders while the San Francisco 49ers are trending up with the addition of franchise quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo.
Even though Wilson is still considered to be a top-tier quarterback in the NFL, the Seahawks could struggle for quite some time as Schneider and company try to put the pieces back together in Seattle.
