The Seattle Seahawks made the quarterback position a need immediately after their trade of star quarterback Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos. While the Seahawks received Broncos' signal-caller Drew Lock in return for Wilson, the depth chart was still looking awfully thin after the blockbuster deal. That's why Seattle made this key move with quarterback Geno Smith, as reported by Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.

Per Fowler, The Seahawks agreed to a one-year extension with quarterback Geno Smith, one that will be worth up to $7 million. It's a pay increase for the 31-year-old, who made $1.2 million this past year for Seattle.

Smith was very important for the Seahawks this past year, as he stepped in as the team's starter following Wilson's hand injury. The former second round pick threw for 701 yards with five touchdown passes and one interception in three games started for the franchise.

No one is expecting Smith to fill the void left behind by Wilson when he was dealt to the Broncos, though the former can certainly provide a veteran presence in the room if the Seahawks ultimately decide to roll with Lock as their starter- or if they select a signal-caller in the upcoming draft.

It's not a flashy move, but Smith will provide some much-needed depth in 2022.
