Josh Gordon wasn't as hot of a commodity as most presume. According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, only one team wanted to pick up the polarizing wide receiver off of waivers: the Seattle Seahawks.
Interestingly enough, that notion goes against why the New England Patriots waived to release him to waivers — after the trade deadline — in the first place. The thought behind the Patriots waiting to release him after the trade deadline is that he would go through waivers, which would potentially land him on a non-contender. That didn't quite happen.
Twenty-seven teams were ahead of the Seahawks on the waivers, including some contenders that certainly could use wide receiver help. Nonetheless, those contenders passed him up. Why? Potentially due to a rumored lack of a work ethic or his extensive history with substance-abuse related suspensions, or they are simply scared of somebody that even the Patriots would release.
Whether other teams wanted him or not doesn't matter for Seattle. They are excited to add another playmaker to their cabinet of, well, playmakers.
“He’s a big-play guy,” said coach Pete Carroll on Friday via Gregg Bell of the Tacoma News Tribune. “He’s been able to stretch the field and those that I know that have worked with him and coached him have raved about his talent and play-making ability.”
On the season, Gordon has 20 receptions for 287 yards and a touchdown in six games played. In 2018, splitting time in New England and Cleveland, Gordon reeled in 41 receptions for 737 yards and four touchdowns. He will not play in Week 9 against Tampa Bay.
