Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady has never been renowned for his scrambling ability. After all, this is the same guy who ran a 5.28 40-yard dash at the 2000 NFL combine.

But Brady is inspired by today's wave of quarterbacks using their legs to make plays. He mused Thursday he is determined to get faster in the offseason:

“I’m going to work on my speed,” Brady said, via Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. “I see those guys running around. I’ve got to make a few of those plays.”

Needless to say, the Bucs are not banking on Brady extending many plays outside the pocket.

Part of the reason guys like Patrick Mahomes, Deshaun Watson and Lamar Jackson are so dangerous is because of their escapability and elusiveness. Those three young stars are sometimes at their best when forced to improvise.

That has never been the case with Brady. The six-time Super Bowl champion has usually been at his best when he gets the ball out faster and picks opposing defenses apart from the pocket.

Brady has also taken to throwing more deep balls in Bruce Arians' offensive system. He led the NFL in intended air yards per pass attempt in 2020, per Pro Football Reference, ultimately finishing third in passing yards.

The Buccaneers will hope Brady can hit on a few of those deep balls on Sunday as Tampa Bay squares off against Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LV. Perhaps the 43-year-old will even begin offseason training early and flex some mobility against Kansas City's defense.
