After getting into multiple verbal altercations on the field during Super Bowl 55, Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady texted an apology to Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu, according to ESPN’s Jenna Laine.

Brady and Mathieu got into each other’s faces during the game, which was won by the Buccaneers, 31-9. The 43-year old was even seen chasing Mathieu to exchange more words with him, although their altercations never escalated beyond that. The safety, however, was flagged for taunting in the second half after one of his exchanges with Brady.

But according to the report, Tom Brady apologized to the 28-year old for losing his composure during the game, and was all praises for the safety, saying that he was the “ultimate competitor” and that he has been following his career since his time with LSU.

The seven-time Super Bowl champion also praised Mathieu for being an “incredible leader, a champion, and a class act.” Aside from the text, Brady has also expressed a desire to apologize to Mathieu in person.

After the game, Mathieu praised Tom Brady as a quarterback but said that he saw a side of him that he hadn’t seen before. He also said that the five-time Super Bowl MVP called him something that he couldn’t repeat, while noting that he was the one who got flagged even after Brady chased after him in tweets that have since been deleted.

Both Brady and Mathieu are known for their competitiveness on the field, and that competitiveness was on full display in Super Bowl 55. But when the battle is over, it is clear that the respect between the two players is still mutual even after their verbal spats.
