It doesn't sound like Mike Evans' contract negotiations with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will amount to a new deal for the wide receiver. Last week, Mike Evans' representatives announced that they would end contract talks with the Buccaneers on Sept. 9, the day before Tampa Bay's Week 1 matchup with the Minnesota Vikings. Hours before the deadline, Tampa Bay has no plans to give Evans an extension, The Athletic's Dianna Russini reports.
Evans is set to become a free agent after the 2023 season. The Bucs' wide receiver is in the final year of the five-year, $82.5 million extension he signed in 2018. According to Russini, Evans wants to play his whole career in Tampa Bay.
The Buccaneers selected Evans with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Evans has been among the best receivers in the NFL since making his debut. He owns the record with nine straight 1,000-yard seasons to start his NFL career. The 30-year-old finished the 2022 season with 1,124 receiving yards and six touchdowns.

The report suggests that Evans and the Buccaneers want to stay together beyond the 2023 season. When looking at Tampa Bay's long-term outlook, however, it might make sense for the two sides to go their separate ways. The Buccaneers are expected to be among the NFL's worst teams this year. If Evans wants to compete for championships while he's still a highly productive player, he probably should look to play elsewhere.
Evans won his first Super Bowl with Tampa Bay two years ago.
