Hall of Fame defensive tackle Warren Sapp knows a thing or two about defense. He was part of some terrific defenses during his nine-year stint with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But Sapp clearly did not like what he saw from the Bucs D in 2017.

“I'm lost. I'm as lost as any fan. And I know defense when I'm looking at it. It just doesn't make sense.”

“It really does not make sense what they're doing on a play-in, play-out basis,” Sapp said. “But hey, somebody is making a lot more money than me doing it. So I'm gonna hope that they can fix it, because what we saw this year was disgraceful, absolutely disgraceful.”

It shouldn’t take an expert to see how poorly the Bucs played on that side of the ball last season. They finished dead last in the NFL in total defense, giving up 378.1 yards per game. They also had just 22 sacks, which was also ranked last in the league. Sapp by himself had 16.5 sacks during the 2000 season.

Gerald McCoy, who has filled Sapp’s shoes as the team’s star defensive tackle, has already started to make noise about wanting more accountability on the team. He has also voiced his desire for management to get the defense some reinforcements in the form of former Bucs players Michael Bennett and Aqib Talib this offseason.

After opting not make changes on the coaching side following the defense’s massive shortcomings, it remains to be seen what moves the Bucs make to shore up that defense for next season. But whatever they do, Sapp and the rest of the Bucs fans will be watching closely.
