In what could ultimately become his final season as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, veteran quarterback Jameis Winston went out with a bang if he does not return to the struggling franchise going forward.
While producing massive numbers both good and bad, the former top overall NFL Draft pick out of Florida State has now left the NFC South franchise with an interesting decision to make. Winston is gearing up to hit free agency for the first time as a professional signal-caller.
Spending his first five NFL seasons as a member of the Buccaneers, Winston spent this past year under the direction of head coach Bruce Arians for the first time. While the two seemingly got along well enough, it remains to be seen as to whether or not the seasoned NFL head coach wishes to bring back the soon-to-be free agent Winston for another go-round — if not longer — in Tampa Bay.
Because of Winston's consistently inconsistent play throughout both his NFL career and specifically the 2019-20 regular season, it will be interesting to see what decision is eventually made in Tampa Bay.
Jameis Winston throws for over 5,000 yards
With the Tampa Bay Buccaneers taking on the rival Atlanta Falcons in Week 17, Jameis Winston only needed the first half in order to surpass 5,000 yards through the air for the season. Registering exactly 5,109 yards as a result of his 16 regular-season appearances in 2019,20, Winston notably became just the eighth quarterback in NFL history to accomplish such a feat.
While eclipses this plateau is definitely quite the accolade to have under his belt upon heading into free agency, Winston's ability to sling the rock has never been in question. However, his inability to be accurate in addition to throwing the football all over the field remains one of the league's biggest ongoing mysteries.
Jameis Winston throws more than 30 touchdown passes
Despite turning the football over at a rapid pace in 2019-20, Jameis Winston still managed to produce a whopping 33 passing touchdowns this past season. Not only that, but Winston actually led the entire NFC in this category as only two other quarterbacks in the conference eclipsed the 30-score mark via passing touchdowns.
Even so, Winston could not prove to be consistent on a weekly basis as his performances were simply all over the place in terms of positives and negatives.
Jameis Winston throws 30 interceptions
In addition to leading the NFL with more than 5,000 passing yards and leading the NFC with more than 0 touchdown passes, Jameis Winston also produced another shocking statistic this past season.
Winston infamously threw a whopping 30 interceptions in 2019-20, a mark that led the entire NFL. Not only that, but Winston's 30th and final pick of the regular season came in overtime of the team's Week 17 matchup against the rival Atlanta Falcons. Adding to the momentous occasion, that 30th interception was, of course, a dreaded pick-six.
As a result of his inability to stop turning the football over, it remains to be seen as to what exactly will come of Winston's NFL playing career moving forward.
