The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' stifling defense showed out as it effectively slowed down Patrick Mahomes and the rest of the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 55 on Sunday. Numbers from the game eventually showed how Tampa Bay imposed its will over Mahomes on the field which led them to emerge victorious over their opponents.
Via Nate Taylor of The Athletic:
“The two stats are the 29 pressures on Mahomes dropbacks and the yards Mahomes had to run: Mahomes was pressured on 29 of his 56 dropbacks, the most of any quarterback in Super Bowl history.”
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid only used a short rotation of offensive linemen to pass-black for Mahomes against the pesky defenders of the Buccaneers. According to Next Gen Stats by Zebra Technologies, the combination of offensive tackle Mike Remmers, offensive guards Andrew Wylie and Stefen Wisniewski, along with left guard Nick Allegretti and center Austin Reiter was deployed on 92 percent of Mahomes' dropbacks.
The former Super Bowl MVP also had a hard time locating his teammates as he often had to scramble outside the pocket with Buccaneers' pass rushers constantly after him. Mahomes ran a total of 497 yards before releasing the ball which served as the most pre-throw and pre-sack yards ever recorded in the 2020 NFL season.
Due to the trouble caused by the Buccaneers' defenders, Patrick Mahomes was forced to throw two interceptions in the game. He was also sacked three times which hindered his team from gaining any rhythm in the contest.
Patrick Mahomes finished the championship game with tallies of 270 passing yards on 26-of-49 passes without a touchdown scored. His team ultimately failed to defend their title as they succumbed to a 31-9 loss on Sunday night.
