The Houston Texans have the potential to be one of the most explosive offenses in the league in the 2018 NFL season. First, they will need to determine the pecking order of their tight end position.

The retirement of tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz has left a void on the offensive line as well as the passing game. According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, tight ends coach Tim Kelly says the Texans will rely on a committee to pick up the slack:

“I think they all have different strengths and weaknesses that they have to work on,” Kelly said. “As far as replacing anybody, I don’t know if one person is going to do it. I think it will be more of a collective effort. But again, if you look at the tight ends and how they played last year, it’s more of a collective group, even when C.J. was in the room.”

Fiedorowicz had shown plenty of promise in 2016. Unfortunately, multiple concussions have since forced him into early retirement.

Houston will now rely on a number of players to take his spot. At the top of the depth chart will likely be tight end Ryan Griffi who has logged in a healthy dose of playing time over the past couple of seasons. However, the Texans could also turn to rookie tight ends Jordan Akin and Jordan Thomas to help shoulder the load.

Houston already has a formidable 1-2 punch in the passing game with wide receivers DeAndre Hopkins and Will Fuller. That said, the tight ends may be able to get plenty of open looks underneath from quarterback Deshaun Watson.
