The Washington Commanders will take a new name into next season but could also head into next season with a completely new look on the roster. The Commanders have the 11th pick in the NFL Draft and possess just over $30 million in cap space to utilize in the 2022 NFL offseason. They have an obvious need at quarterback, though that also isn't the least of their worries on offense, with a lack of talent at the skill positions also a problem. The defense, specifically the secondary, could also do with an upgrade. That said, here are three moves the Commanders must make in the 2022 NFL offseason.

3 Moves The Commanders Must Make In 2022 NFL Offseason

3. Extend Terry McLaurin

The Commanders already lack talent at the wide receiver position. If they enter next year's offseason without a new contract for Terry McLaurin, it would be incredibly unwise. McLaurin has done nothing but produce for the Commanders with some less-than-appealing players throwing him passes. In three seasons, the 26-year-old has never totaled less than 900 receiving yards on a team that severely lacks depth behind him. The last thing Washington wants to do is head into next offseason with an unhappy McLaurin on their team. They should get ahead of things in the 2022 NFL offseason and offer McLaurin a contract extension.

2. Trade for a big-name quarterback

The Commanders have seemingly been in quarterback purgatory for the last few seasons. They have had 10 different quarterbacks make starts since the 2018 season, certainly not an ideal situation for any team looking to be successful. The Commanders have tried to add talent through the draft and free agency. Now is the time to take a big swing– Washington needs to trade for a big-name quarterback, whether it's Deshaun Watson of the Houston Texans or Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks- and make a push in the NFC East, which is fairly open besides the Dallas Cowboys.

1. Sign a talented safety

The Commanders' defense took a step back last season ranking 29th in the league in pass coverage. When healthy, the defensive line is a force to be reckoned with. However, the secondary, specifically, the safety position, could do with an infusion of talent. Luckily for the Commanders, there just so happens to be a talented group of safeties available in this year's free agent crop, including Marcus Williams of the New Orleans Saints and Jessie Bates III of the Cincinnati Bengals. Williams, who could be a nice fit alongside Kam Curl, should be the team's primary target in free agency. The Saints star has registered solid PFF grades for the last five years and could help solidify the back end of things for the Commanders.
