The Washington Commanders are just a few days away from the opener of their 2023 season, which will see them host the Arizona Cardinals. Key injury updates on Terry McLaurin and Chase Young will give them a better idea of who they will have out there.
The Commanders announced that McLaurin will be active and that Young and fellow defensive end James Smith-Williams are both questionable.
McLaurin sustained turf toe in a preseason matchup with the Baltimore Ravens and was limited in practice recently. His ability to be a full participant in the days leading up to the game showed that he's ready to go with new starting quarterback Sam Howell.
Meanwhile, Young is dealing with a stinger and Smith-Williams is dealing with an oblique injury. Young has battled injuries all throughout his career but there is optimism that he will be able to play in Week 1.
“He's doing everything he can to get himself ready to play. We have reps scripted for him,” Commanders head coach Ron Rivera said about Young, per the team's website. “We have certain periods that he can participate in and again, it's gonna be all up to what happens with the doctor's visit that he has coming up soon and we'll go from there. But the young man is chomping at the bit. He's done everything that he possibly could and he's getting himself ready to play. Again, if he's cleared, he'll go.”
The Commanders could very likely start off with a win against the paltry Cardinals. Having McLaurin and potentially Young only makes that outcome more likely.
