The NFL world is mourning the loss of former Washington Commanders, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins. The 25-year-old Ohio State standout was tragically killed after being hit by a car in South Florida.

Washington tweeted a statement from Commanders co-owners Dan and Tanya Snyder Saturday morning.

“We are devastated to hear the news of the tragic passing of Dwayne Haskins Jr. He was a young man with a tremendous amount of potential who had an infectious personality. To say we are heartbroken is an understatement,” the Commanders co-owners said. They expressed their condolences to those close to him.

Haskins began his NFL career in Washington. The organization selected him 15th overall in the 2019 NFL Draft after his remarkable two-year career at Ohio State.

The team also tweeted a statement from the Commanders head coach Ron Rivera.

“I am absolutely heartbroken to hear the news of the passing of Dwayne Haskins Jr. Dwayne was a talented young man who had a long life ahead of him. This is a very sad time and I am honestly at a loss for words,” Rivera said. He also expressed condolences to Haskins' loved ones from the entire Commanders team.

Rivera became Washington's head coach in January of 2020 and coached Haskins until he was released in December of that year. The young quarterback joined the Steelers shortly afterward and had been a valued member of the team ever since.
