USA Gymnastics overcomes Simone Biles’ stunning exit to medal at Tokyo Olympics
USA Gymnastics star Simone Biles bowed out of the team final due to a “medical issue” after an awkward vault landing. Despite this massive setback, the Americans were able to regroup and win a silver medal, with the Russian Olympic Committee squad earning gold.
While getting the silver medal is disappointing given Biles is the GOAT and USA Gymnastics was seeking a third straight gold medal in the team competition, still getting silver after her exit is a stellar accomplishment. Team USA finished with a second-place score of 166.096, with the ROC getting 169.528 to win gold. Great Britain won bronze.

The USA Gymnastics squad started the team final event at these Olympics on the vault, with Biles going last out of the group. She seemed to change up her plan midair and was then tended to by the trainer after her landing. She then left the arena before returning to cheer on her teammates.
There was some speculation on the NBC broadcast about a “mental issue,” but the official line from USA Gymnastics is currently a “medical issue.” Biles did recently admit that she has been feeling a lot of pressure in these Olympics because of her status as the immense favorite. Whatever she’s dealing with, she deserves immense support.
It’s still unclear if Simone Biles will return and participate in the all-around final on Thursday and the event finals later in the Olympics.
