The Green Bay Packers signed wide receiver Sammy Watkins to a one-year $4 million deal on Thursday morning. Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is reportedly very excited and ready to get to work with his new weapon.

Pat McAfee revealed Rodgers' response to the Packers signing of Watkins.

McAfee read the text that he reportedly received from the Packers embattled quarterback.

“Spoke to Sammy Watkins last night, excited about the signing, can't wait to get to work with Sammy Watkins.”

Everyone on the show was clearly fired up with Rodgers' response. But this signing should be looked at a little more closely. Watkins is not the player he once was. Watkins was drafted fourth overall in the 2014 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills. Early on in his career with the Bills, Watkins looked as though he might become one of the best receivers in football. In his second season, he surpassed 1,000 yards receiving.

In the six seasons since, Watkins' best season was in 2019 when he had 52 catches for 673 yards. Half of those seasons, he did not even reach 500 yards receiving. Injuries and inconsistency have plagued his career.

The Packers still needed a veteran wide receiver, and Watkins can fill a role. But if the expectation is that he will be their number one wide receiver on the outside, they are going to be sorely disappointed.

Rodgers has long had trust issues with his receivers. The one guy he trusted, Davante Adams, was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders this offseason. That created a gaping hole at the position. The Packers are still highly likely to address this need at the NFL Draft later this month.
