The Green Bay Packers are coming off the sudden decision to part ways with head coach Mike McCarthy following a disappointing Week 13 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

It has thrust Joe Philbin into the interim head coach position for the rest of the season while the team figures things out about what direction they want to head at the spot for the long-term. However, team CEO Mark Murphy has suggested that Philbin could be a candidate to fulfill the position, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.

Monday’s back-to-back press conferences from Packers CEO Mark Murphy/G.M. Brian Gutekunst and interim head coach Joe Philbin made two things clear: (1) Philbin is a candidate for the permanent coaching job; and (2) Philbin isn’t ready to talk about that.

“It’s an opportunity to see Joe for four games,” Murphy told reporters. “See how the team responds. See how coaches and others respond.”

Philbin has plenty of experience in the NFL that includes spending several years with the Packers in two different tenures as he's in his first year back with the team and ninth overall. He has held many positions in the organization on the offensive side of the ball under McCarthy over the years.

Philbin is currently the offensive coordinator for the team, which is a spot that he held in his last stint for four years before leaving for the head coaching gig for the Miami Dolphins. Things didn't transpire as hoped with the Dolphins as he held a 24-28 record with the team that saw him get fired during the season in the 2015 campaign after just four games played. Miami finished winning eight or fewer games in his first full three campaigns.

These last four games of the season will provide the team with some sense how things could operate under Philbin, but at the very least he could be one of many candidates for the position.
