Jordan Love took his chance to be the future of the Green Bay Packers and ran with it in the 2023 season. Now that he’s entrenched as the starter, it's time to address his contract status for the future.

Love was asked about his contract situation as the Packers begin organized team activities. He signed a one-year extension off of his rookie deal and is on a cheap contract for just one more season. After that, so long as Love continues his productive play, the franchise will have to sign him to a long-term deal.

“I don’t really know what’s going on, but we’ll see,” Love said to reporters. “I’m not gonna get into too much contract stuff.”

For many players, not having a contract extension in place means that they won’t participate in OTAs. That’s not the case for Love, who is working out with the Packers. Whether he sits out any practices or preseason games later on has yet to be determined.

“We’ll see. I don’t know yet. We’ll see,” Love responded to a question about whether he would be comfortable playing out his current deal.

Packers' Jordan Love participates in OTAs amid contract extension talks

The Packers having their starting quarterback participate in the team's first offseason workouts despite being on an expiring contract is a great showing of dedication. It's understandable for players to hold out as they wait for the team to pay them what they’re worth but Jordan Love is opting to stick it out.

“I think that's always a part of it, just showing up and the other guys will follow, too,” the Packers QB said. “But it's a testament to everybody wanting to be here, wanting to get that work in. Obviously, [there is a] new defense going in so those guys are eager to get out here and get those reps in and learn what they're doing. But, yeah, it's just a testament to everybody being able to show up here.”

In what could become a very competitive division soon, the Packers need to lock down Love as soon as possible. The Detroit Lions are fresh off of an appearance in the NFC Championship Game. The Chicago Bears were very competitive after trading for Montez Sweat last season and revamped their offense around highly touted rookie quarterback Caleb Williams. The Minnesota Vikings will need some time to build around J.J. McCarthy but a team with Justin Jefferson (and former Packer Aaron Jones) is always a threat.

Green Bay won nine games last season and added some solid talent to its roster. The signings of Josh Jacobs and Xavier McKinney added solid starters right away and the front office made numerous selections in the first few rounds of the draft. The Packers have someone with the potential to be good enough to lead them through the playoffs for years and years.

Love said that he “definitely” has felt “a lot more comfortable” with each season he has been with the Packers. Eventually, the front office will have to lock down the young quarterback they spent years developing behind the scenes on a long-term deal.
