During this past weekend, Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews suffered a broken nose during the team's charity softball game after taking a line drive.

Since then, things have settled down with Matthews voicing no concern over the injury that he will undergo surgery later this week once the swelling in his noise subsides. Head coach Mike McCarthy has also taken a moment to make light of the situation by picking apart his defense after the ball was hit, according to Ian Rapoport of The NFL Network.

There is clearly no concern about this injury snowballing into anything else after he undergoes surgery later this week. It was just a freak incident that shouldn't jeopardize anything else moving forward. It could have been a much worse situation had the softball not hit him in the nose and another area of his face instead.

The only thing that this injury with likely force Matthews to do is miss time as he heals from the injury over the next couple of weeks that could see him miss some time in training camp. The 32-year-old is expected to be a major part of the Packers' game plan defensively as a huge factor as a pass rusher. He is coming off a respectable 2017 campaign where he recorded 8.5 sacks along with 43 total tackles in 14 games played, which he has now recorded more than 5.0 sacks in each of his first nine seasons.

On top of that, there is no concern with players on the team continuing to play in the charity softball game that has been going on for more than 20 years that has been held at the home field for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, who are the minor league affiliate for the Milwaukee Brewers. It is just a cautionary tale for players to prepare for the possibility of a situation like this arising in the future.
