In 2017, Patrick Mahomes spent his rookie season as the backup to veteran quarterback Alex Smith. After the Chiefs traded Smith to the Washington Redskins the following season, Mahomes was eventually named the starter. In the 2018 season, Mahomes threw for 5,097 yards, 50 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.

With his performance, he became the only quarterback in history to throw for over 5,000 yards in a season in both the collegiate ranks and the NFL. He also joined Peyton Manning as the only players in NFL history to throw 50 touchdown passes and 5,000 yards in a single season.

In his first season as a starter, he was named to the Pro Bowl, named First-Team All-Pro, won the NFL Offensive Player of the Year along with the NFL Most Valuable Player honors.

3. Passing Heroics

A couple of games during the 2018 season showed how the Chiefs quarterback is capable of pulling out tricks from his sleeve just to lead his team to a win.

Prior to this game, many fans know Mahomes as a right-handed gunslinger. However, Mahomes has made it known that he is an ambidextrous thrower as well. On October 1, 2018, he unleashed a left-handed heave late in the fourth quarter while being hit by Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller. The completed pass to wide receiver Tyreek Hill helped the Chiefs to a 27-23 comeback victory over the Denver Broncos in Mile High.

On December 9, 2018, the Chiefs were against the Baltimore Ravens with 2 minutes left in the first half. Mahomes zigzagged on the planes to locate a friend but ended up throwing a sweet no-look pass to hit wide receiver Demarcus Robinson for 17 yards.

A minute later, Mahomes threw a sidearm dart to teammate Demarcus Ware. The motion of the ball flew by Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs and reached the Chiefs wide receiver who picked up 31 yards.

In the fourth quarter of the same game, the Chiefs were down 17-24 with 1:28 to go. Mahomes threw a hail-mary pass out of desperation but speedster Tyreek Hill was able to time the catch and complete the 48-yard connection. The Chiefs eventually won the game in overtime, 27-24.

2. Super Bowl LIV

Super Bowl LIV remains to be Patrick Mahomes' biggest accomplishment to date. The Kansas City Chiefs dismantled fellow contenders Houston Texans and the Tennessee Titans. They eventually found themselves pitted against NFC Champion San Francisco 49ers on the biggest stage.

Both teams were struggling to get ahead of the other as the first half ended on a 10-all tie. Jimmy Garoppolo and the 49ers had a dominating start to the third frame. A Robbie Gould field goal and a rushing touchdown by wide receiver Raheem Mostert put the 49ers in a comfortable position, leading 20-10.

Mahomes, however, won't let the championship game slip away just yet. He somehow flipped the switch and led the team to a huge 21-0 run. A fluid offense and a steady defensive line gave the 31-20 victory to the Chiefs.

Mahomes was named the Super Bowl MVP as he completed 26 of 42 pass attempts for 286 yards (two touchdowns, two interceptions) and rushed for 29 yards (one touchdown).

Nothing can truly compare to winning it all for your team.

In July 2020, Mahomes signed a 10-year contract extension with the Chiefs worth $477 million with another $26 million in potential bonuses, for a total of $503 million. The deal stands as the richest contract in the history of North American professional sports.

A young quarterback of Mahomes' caliber deserves to get paid generously. The Chiefs Kingdom is delighted to have their franchise quarterback back at the helm which they hope will bring more Super Bowl wins for the franchise in the future.

At age 24, his career is only starting and we will continue to be witnesses as his Hall-of-Fame-bound career progresses. His stacked resume speaks volumes on his abilities as the league's top gunslinger.
