Adrian Clayborn is moving on. The veteran defensive lineman on Friday announced his release from the New England Patrionts on social media, thanking the organization for his one-season stint in Foxboro.

“Thank you @Patriots for my time with the organization,” he wrote on Twitter. “I gained so much respect for how you do things and win championships. It’s done the right way through hard work. Thank you for granting my release. I’m ready for this next chapter.”

Clayborn was one of New England's most notable offseason acquisitions last year. The eight-year veteran signed a two-year, $10 million deal with the Patriots on March 17th of last year. He played in 14 games last season while rotating in across New England's defensive line, finishing with 11 tackles, three tackles for loss, two and-a-half sacks, and 13 quarterback hits – the lowest numbers of his career across the board in a healthy season.

Anyone expecting Clayborn to duplicate his more gaudy statistical line from the previous season, though, was always fooling themselves. He had a career-high nine and-a-half sacks with the Atlanta Falcons in 2017, a total artificially inflated by his historic performance in a 27-7 victory over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 10. Clayborn recorded a whopping six sacks in the victory, coming one quarterback takedown shy of Derrick Thomas' longstanding single-game record of seven sacks. He also had only 17 quarterback hits during his final season in Atlanta, further evidence that his sack total was mostly related to a one-game blip.

The Patriots, who traded for veteran pass-rusher Michael Bennett earlier this week, save $3.9 million in cap room by releasing Clayborn.
