For the first time since 2005, Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots will be in the market for a new offensive coordinator after the departure of longtime play-caller Josh McDaniels to Las Vegas for the Raiders' head coaching job. Belichick and the Patriots are looking far and wide, though they're also examining options they are quite familiar with. This former New York Jets coach is being eyed by Belichick and the Patriots as their McDaniels replacement, as reported by NFL Network's Mike Giardi and WBZ Sports Boston.
According to NFL Network’s Mike Giardi, Gase’s name “keeps popping up” around the league for New England’s offensive coordinator vacancy. That probably won’t sit too well with Patriots fans, as Gase didn’t enjoy much success during his time as a head coach.
Former Jets and Miami Dolphins head coach Adam Gase's name “keeps popping up” as a possible Josh McDaniels replacement for the Patriots and Bill Belichick. New England fans won't be too happy to hear that, as Gase's tenure with the Jets did not go well.
However, aside from the Jets debacle, Gase was reasonably successful as a quarterback coach and offensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos, infamously earning Peyton Manning's praise for his work.
Perhaps Belichick, who has reportedly always “respected” the former Jets head coach, recognizes that Gase's niche could be as a play-caller, and has thus tabbed him as a potential McDaniels replacement for the Pats.
Former Jets coach Adam Gase is certainly an unexpected name for Patriots fans to hear as a Josh McDaniels replacement, though it wouldn't be the first time that Bill Belichick has zigged when everyone else zagged.
Don't panic yet, Patriots fans.
