Based on the reporting out of New England Patriots training camp over the past couple of weeks, Cam Newton would seem to be the frontrunner to be the franchise's first Week 1 starting quarterback not named Tom Brady since 2001.

Second-year QB Jarrett Stidham—the presumptive favorite to land the gig before Newton was signed on July 8th—has struggled with minor injuries and confidence, and Newton has received the majority of reps. Veteran Brian Hoyer, who has appeared in 23 career games for New England, is also theoretically in the running.

Yet, 14 days before the Patriots host the Miami Dolphins on Sept. 13 at Gillette Stadium, Belichick has not ended officially ended the quarterback competition.

During his press conference on Monday, the six-time Super Bowl-winning coach was asked when he'll be ready to name a Week 1 starter, and Belichick was characteristically coy in his response:

“When we’re ready to do it, we’ll do it,” Belichick said.

The Chicago Bears have opted against declaring a starter before they face the Detroit Lions in Week 1, and Belichick could be taking a similar approach.

As the old adage goes: when you have two (or three) quarterbacks, you have none. Newton, while an experienced, accomplished player with an MVP under his belt, has plenty to prove after battling injuries over the past couple of years that resulted in a lukewarm free agent market. By all accounts, he's impressed the Patriots with his work ethic on-the-field and in his devotion to studying Josh McDaniels' playbook.

Belichick may already be leaning heavily towards—or has already decided on—Newton based on his strong camp showing and is simply being his typically cryptic self.

Or, if you're a Patriots fan with a half-empty glass of Boston Lager, Belichick's reluctance to commit could imply that none of the QBs have dramatically stood out.
