The New England Patriots are in the midst of the training camp QB battle. Veteran Jacoby Brissett is the early favorite to start for the Patriots in Week 1. However, he'll have to fend off first-round pick Drake Maye and fellow rookie QB Joe Milton III. Colin Cowherd recently made an incredibly bold claim about who he thinks will win that job.

He made the claim on a recent episode of The Herd w/ Colin Cowherd. Essentially, Cowherd believes that the Patriots have a defensive culture and therefore are a difficult landing spot for any rookie QB. He continued by saying that Joe Milton III could have an edge over Maye as a better playmaker and athlete.

Cowherd concluded by saying “don't be shocked if Joe Milton wins this job.”

On its face, this is a pretty absurd argument. It is far too early in training camp to make such a bold take — there simply isn't enough evidence to support this claim.

However, it is not like Cowherd is going off of nothing. Earlier this week, Ben Volin of the Boston Globe reported part of what Cowherd was saying. Specifically that Milton III has outplayed Maye over the first six practices of Patriots training camp.

“I wrote after last Thursday’s practice that Milton is the “wow” quarterback at camp— the guy with the best size, best athleticism, and biggest arm,” Volin said. “Now I’ll take it a step further: Milton outplayed Maye over the first six practices of camp. You can’t tell which player is the No. 3 overall pick (Maye) and which is the sixth-round flier (Milton).”

This will be an interesting competition to watch over the preseason.

Don't forget about Jacoby Brissett in this QB competition.

The veteran QB started training camp as the projected Week 1 starter, and either Maye or Milton III will have to seriously ball out to change it.

Brissett recently shared his confident perspective with Kay Adams on the Up & Adams show.

“Two things can be true: Like I can be perfect for the situation, but I’m the perfect guy to start, too,” Brissett said. “Don’t take that away from me either. I fully expect myself to be the starter as long as I am here. Whatever happens outside of that, that has nothing to do with me. That doesn’t mean I little myself for somebody else. That just means like hey, I’m not too big for a situation to where I can go out there and perform but also go out there and help my teammates and help lead this team.”

Brissett certainly has the most NFL experience of any QB on the team.

It would be shocking if Jerod Mayo chose a different starting QB for Week 1. After that, it is anyone's guess.
