After 14 successful seasons with the team, the New England Patriots have released kicker Stephen Gostkowski per Jim McBride of the Boston Globe.

Gostkowski, 36, is a three-time Super Bowl champion and the franchise's all-time leading scorer with 1,775 points — 617 more than Adam Vinatieri, who is second.

The Memphis product has been one of the best kickers in the NFL for over a decade, making four Pro Bowls and two All-Pro teams throughout his career.

However, Gostkowski struggled with injuries in 2019 and a hip injury limited the veteran to just four games last season. In those games, Gostkowski hit seven of his eight field-goal attempts with a long of 41 while also hitting 11 of his 15 extra-point attempts.

For his career, Gostkowski has a field-goal percentage of 87.5 and has hit 25 of his career 35 attempts from 50-plus yards.

Without their consistent veteran last season, the Patriots shuffled in several different kickers last season with varying amounts of success. Other than Gostkowski, Nick Folk started seven games, Mike Nugent started four and Kai Forbath started one.

All in all, the Patriots kickers went an unimpressive 27-34 on field-goal attempts and just 5-10 on attempts between 40-49 yards.

Releasing the veteran kicker will save $3.5 million in cap space.

As a team, the Patriots went 12-4 in the regular season but were upset by the Tennessee Titans in the AFC Wild Card round.

With all three replacement kickers struggling at times, it's likely that the Patriots select a kicker late in April's NFL Draft or chase after an undrafted free agent when the draft concludes.
