It's time to continue our MLB odds series with a Phillies-Mariners prediction and pick. Find out how to watch Phillies-Mariners.

The Baltimore Orioles-Cleveland Guardians series is the big showdown in Major League Baseball this weekend, but after that, this is definitely the second-best series on the schedule. The Philadelphia Phillies have finally run into a really rough patch of play. It was going to happen at some point because a 162-game schedule is the ultimate marathon in team sports. No club is going to go through a full year of play without at least one prolonged slump. The Phillies are in the middle of it, having lost four straight games and looking mortal on both offense and defense. The Phillies are still regarded by most as the best team in baseball, but they're not perfect. The lower half of the batting order has a few holes. The starting pitching is really good but might be regressing to the mean, suggesting that the brilliant first three months of the season should not necessarily be seen as a representative standard of what we're going to see in October. The Phils' starters might have overperformed. They're still really good, but it might be too much to expect them to dominate. The bullpen has wobbled, which is why Dave Dombrowski went out and got Carlos Estevez from the Angels. The Phillies have a chance to end their drought in Seattle and calm the seas as September and the stretch run begin to appear in full view.

The Seattle Mariners made deadline moves to get more bats. Randy Arozarena and Justin Turner aren't home-run-level trade acquisitions, but they are capable veteran hitters who could certainly add something to the mix. The tricky part of evaluating the Mariners is that their first series after the deadline was against the woeful White Sox, who have lost 17 straight games. The Mariners did well to pound them into dust, but it's still just the White Sox. Seattle did not fare nearly as well in Boston, losing two of three to the Red Sox. We need to see Seattle hold its own against good teams. There's no better team than the Phillies.

Phillies-Mariners Projected Starters

Tyler Phillips vs. Bryan Woo

Tyler Phillips (3-0) has a 1.80 ERA. The young starter, with four starts in 2024, has quickly become a fan favorite. How could he not? He just threw a complete-game shutout against the team with the best record in baseball, the Cleveland Guardians. Phillips has drawn comparisons to his long-armed teammate and fellow starter Aaron Nola. Phillips has a quick-whip delivery which hides the release point and has been hard for hitters to pick up. If this is what the Phillies are getting on a regular basis, their October chances will soar.

Last Start: Saturday, July 27 vs the Cleveland Guardians: 9 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 HR, 1 BB, 4 K

2024 Road Splits: 2 starts, 10 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 BB, 10 K

Bryan Woo (4-1) has a 2.35 ERA. The reality remains the same for Woo: Great pitcher when healthy, but not regularly healthy. He went only four innings against the White Sox. The Mariners are rightly concerned about how his body will hold up. The numbers are great; it's all a matter of being consistently available to pitch and help the team.

Last Start: Saturday, July 27 vs the Chicago White Sox: 4 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 HR, 1 BB, 3 K

2024 Home Splits: 4 starts, 21 1/3 IP, 11 H, 3 R, 1 HR, 2 BB, 15 K

Why The Phillies Will Cover The Spread/Win

After getting swept by the Yankees, the Phils will be mad. Tyler Phillips is dealing. The Mariner bats have to prove they're better. Philadelphia might blow this game out of the water.

Why The Mariners Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Phillies are nosediving and playing their worst ball of the year. New Mariners Arozarena and Turner get to make their home debuts before a big, energized Seattle crowd. Seattle will feed off adrenaline and win thanks to Woo's quality pitching.

Final Phillies-Mariners Prediction & Pick

This looks like a great spot for a Philly reset and blowout at plus money. Take the Phils on the run line.
