The Detroit Pistons signed Serbian big man Boban Marjanovic to a 3 year, $21 million contract this off-season, with the fear that Aron Baynes will leave next off-season by opting out of his contract, according to Piston's editor Keith Langlois
“Marjanovic was signed because the Pistons are planning for 2017-18 and beyond on the expectation that Baynes will opt out of his contract next July and likely earn offers beyond the Pistons’ ability to compete given the fact they’ll only have partial Bird rights that limit what they can pay him.”
Now if Baynes decides to opt into his contract, and stay with the Pistons for one more season, they have a serious log jam in the paint. With Andre Drummond, Baynes and Marjanovic all deserving of minutes, playing time might be stretched out. But with the cap exploding, it's very unlikely for Baynes to opt in when he can earn more money now.
But the Pistons had a great off-season, by signing Marjanovic, Jon Leuer, Ish Smith, and Ray McCallum. They also drafted Henry Ellenson and Michael Gbinije.
