Aaron Donald has undoubtedly become the most dominant defensive player in the NFL for the Los Angeles Rams. However, prior to becoming an All-Pro defensive tackle, Donald revealed how he almost ended up playing running back.

“I mean I grew up playing you know like middle linebacker since Little League, so growing up I always thought I would play running back you know,” Donald said on PFT Live on Thursday. “But I ate my way out of that position, so you know I started playing defensive line probably around 12 or 13 and just been stuck there ever since.”

Since the Rams drafted Donald in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft, he's been a one-man wrecking crew. The Pittsburgh native has totaled 72 sacks, 117 tackles for loss, and 15 forced fumbles in his first six seasons.

In addition, Donald has accumulated five All-Pro selections and is the two-time reigning Defensive Player of the Year. As good as he was in 2019, it's unlikely he takes home the hardware for the third straight season. Without a doubt, Los Angeles is grateful that Donald became a defensive lineman in high school.

On the other hand, defensive players in the NFL are happy that they don't have to tackle Donald. By watching Donald play along the defensive line, you can tell he would've been a tough running back to tackle.

Over the years, there are always stories of defensive players that had the desire to play offense. With Donald being the latest, maybe Sean McVay will dial up a goal-line run for the interior defender next season. Nevertheless, Donald's bank account says that he made the right move to play defensive tackle instead of running back.
