While the Los Angeles Rams could be busy shopping star running back Todd Gurley as the NFL's free agency kicked off earlier this week, it's doesn't go unnoticed that franchise quarterback Jared Goff had his roster bonus cashed in, and with that, a monster dead-cap hit for the NFC West club.

According to Michael Ginnitti of Spotrac, as of Thursday, Goff's presence on the Rams' roster produces a $36 million hit on the salary cap (more than triple last year when the former first-overall pick was still on his rookie deal). Further, Goff earns a $21 million roster bonus while $43 million of future salary becomes fully guaranteed.

The Rams have slowly been leaning into the 25-year-old California product, and the past season saw a dramatic shift for head coach Sean McVay's team as Goff was unleashed in a pass-first offense while Gurley's production diminished. In 2019, Goff threw for 4,638 passing yards on 394 completions, tossing a career-high 626 attempts in 16 games, connecting on 62.9 percent of his throws and notching 22 touchdowns and 16 picks.

Clearly the Rams are committed to Goff, along with committing a boatload of guaranteed money to the budding star. Goff and the Rams reached Super Bowl LIII in 2018-19, losing to the New England Patriots in their pursuit of a sixth Lombardi Trophy, and only scoring three points in the affair.

The following season, in 2019, the Rams disappointed, becoming the third team in the last two decades to fail to reach the postseason a year removed from representing their conference in the big game.

There is still a lot of optimism surrounding Jared Goff, but the Rams know they need to build around him to succeed moving forward, otherwise, they'll be paying huge sums of cash for no reason.
