Jared Goff is coming off his most disappointing season since being drafted No. 1 overall in 2016. The Los Angeles Rams finished 9-7 and failed to make the playoffs for the third year in a row.

Goff signed a four-year extension back in September worth $134 million and an NFL-record $110 million guaranteed. Yes, this extension was a bit premature and the number was way too high, but the Rams were comfortable with Goff as their franchise quarterback. This contract has been reconstructed to give the Rams some help with cap space.

The first year of Goff's career cannot carry much weight given he was thrown into a poor scenario. The Jeff Fisher effect was in full swing as Goff started seven games and went 0-7 with five touchdowns and seven interceptions. He would go on to be a Pro Bowler in the next two years under Sean McVay with 60 touchdowns and only 19 interceptions. Goff led the Rams to 24 wins and a Super Bowl appearance.

After scoring just three points in the Super Bowl against the New England Patriots and disappointing in 2019, Goff needs a big bounce back year in 2020. And the same could be said for his head coach.

The league seemed to catch up to McVay during the middle portion of the 2019 season. He did not have his offense running like the offensive guru that he was dubbed in 2017. A big reason for that is the play of Goff, and mediocre rushing attack. Goff finished the season with 4,638 yards and 22 touchdowns to 16 interceptions. He led the league in pass attempts with 626. Los Angeles still managed to win nine games. If Goff improves in 2020, the sky is the limit.

This is an extremely important season for Goff. First and foremost, he is now paid like a franchise quarterback, so it is time to perform like one on a consistent basis. His rookie campaign is washed away and Goff saw great success in McVay's first two years. Goff looked like a victim of the classic Super Bowl hangover in 2019.

It is now up to Goff to prove that last season was a fluke and he is that big money player. There is no reason for a quarterback like Goff to not have success with the Rams. He is a big quarterback with great arm talent. The Rams have set him up with a strong receiving duo of Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods. The Rams could return to their dominant ways in 2020 and it begins with the play of Goff.
