The Texas Rangers are in the market for a number of marquee free agents this winter.

Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports that the Rangers have “checked in” on Washington Nationals third baseman Anthony Rendon as well as Josh Donaldson and a number of tip pitchers:

Rendon grew up in Houston Texas and went to Rice University. He would immediately fill a gaping hole at third base left behind by Rangers legend Adrian Beltre in 2018.

The 29-year-old Rendon–who finished third in the NL MVP voting–led the MLB with 126 RBIs while slashing .319/.412/.598 with 34 homers.

Meanwhile, the Rangers ranked 27th in baseball in fWAR at the third base spot, according to FanGraphs.

Texas is hoping to acquire some elite-level talent as they open a new ballpark in 2020. The Rangers had some success last season behind breakout years from Lance Lynn and Mike Minor in the rotation in addition to big years from position players like Joey Gallo and Danny Santana.

The Rangers are expecting a revenue boost from their new stadium, and their reservations in spending big the past few years could pay off with a pair of lucrative, multi-year deals. Texas will pursue both Gerrit Cole and Stephen Strasburg, among others, but they should almost certainly end up with one of Rendon, Donaldson or Mike Moustakas.

Rendon may have even boosted his market after a phenomenal run in the postseason. He was a candidate for the World Series MVP award after hitting a pair of homers and driving in eight runs. Can the Rangers convince him to return to his home state?
