The San Antonio Spurs’ medical staff are being put under a bad light after a report surfaced that former Spurs guard Danny Green played parts of last season with an undetected groin injury. Green admitted that during the premiere episode of his own podcast, Inside the Green Room.

Green only found out how hurt he was after the Spurs were already eliminated in the playoffs and only during an exit physical in San Antonio.

Unfortunately for the Spurs’ doctors, many have assumed, probably by reading only the headlines, that it was their negligence that led to Green playing without full knowledge of the extent of his own injury. That was not the case. In fact, Green knew of his injury and was even advised to get a second opinion by his agent but decided not to, as he was too focused on trying to help the Spurs win games instead.

When someone on Twitter told Green that his words were being skewed by the media to make it look as though he was portraying San Antonio’s doctors as a bunch of incompetent individuals, the veteran guard simply affirmed the fan’s observation.

For a clearer understanding of the context of where Green was coming from, here’s part of the transcript of what he was trying to say in his podcast, per Marilyn Dubinski of Pounding the Rock:

“You could tell my play deteriorated towards the end of the season, I wasn’t the same, but in my competitive nature I didn’t want to leave the floor. I didn’t want to leave the floor regardless, and I felt that pressure that we needed to win. We needed everybody, and if I wasn’t playing we really didn’t have much of a shot. If Kawhi’s not playing, we have less of a shot. We missed a couple of other starters and myself. I probably should have sat out, waited, took some time, or did another evaluation, gotten a second opinion, but we’re doing that now.”
