Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Dean Pees had announced shortly after the end of the season that he was set to call time on his 39-year coaching career in order to spend more time with his family. But the 68-year-old had a sudden change of heart less than a month later as he took the Tennessee Titans’ defensive coordinator job.

Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti admits he was caught off guard by Pees’ decision to come back from his supposed retirement.

“I’m a little shocked,” Bisciotti said, per Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com. “He’s 68 years old. It’s hard to give it up, I guess.”

Pees spent eight years with the Baltimore Ravens, six of which he spent as defensive coordinator. Prior to joining the Ravens, he had also spent four seasons as Bill Belichick’s defensive coordinator in New England. He has two Super Bowl rings during his time with those two teams.

But despite the sudden U-turn, Bisciotti doesn’t appear to hold any ill will toward Pees. Instead, he says he’ll be cheering for him and the Titans next season.

“I’m happy for him,” Bisciotti said. “He’s obviously well-respected in the league. I’ll root for them when they’re not playing us.”

As Bisciotti notes, it’s got to be tough for anyone to walk away from something they’ve been doing for close to four decades like Pees has with coaching. Thankfully, Bisciotti seems pretty understanding of Pees' situation and has taken a cool and civil approach to what potentially could have been a messy situation.
