Anthony Kiedis, Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman, will be the subject of a Universal Picture biopic, Deadline exclusively reported.

The film, currently in development, will be produced by Brian Grazer through Imagine Entertainment. Kiedis will also produce alongside Guy Oseary. The movie will be based on Kiedis' New York Times-bestselling 2004 autobiography, Scar Tissue. The title is also that of Red Hot Chili Peppers' iconic song from their 1999 album Californication.

The book follows Kiedis through his fame as Red Hot Chili Peppers' lead singer and his struggles with addiction. It also brings to focus the rock star's relationship his father, Blackie Dammett, as they journey through a substance-fuel Los Angeles punk scene in the '70s and '80s. He examined his and his dad's life, without judgment, and related how it shaped his music.

Kiedis also wrote candidly about being dependent on heroin. For a time, he went to rehab and once tried to quit cold turkey. However, he relapsed in 1994 after being given medication for a wisdom tooth extraction. He also revealed how he wasn't clean at the time he did during the band's Californication era. He stated that he had been clean since Dec. 24, 2000.

Kiedis co-founded RHCP with bassist Flea (born Michael Balzary and a big Lakers fan), guitarist Hillel Slovak and drummer Jack Irons. Slovak died of a heroin overdose in 1988. According to the autobiography, the frontman escaped to Mexico and relapsed into using hard drugs again. Irons quit the band and said he couldn't cope being part of something that contributed to his friend's death. Over time, John Frusciante and Chad Smith joined the band.

Kiedis and the rest of the band were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012. The Red Hot Chili Peppers have won six Grammys: in 1993 for Best Hard Rock Performance for their song Give It Away and in 2000 for Best Rock Song for Scar Tissue, in 2001 for Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group for Californication.

They won four Grammys in 2007 for Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group and Best Rock Song for Dani California and Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package and Best Album for Stadium Arcadium.
