Derrius Guice was projected to be a first-round draft pick in April, but some questions about his character made him fall to the second round where the Washington Redskins selected him.

He has tried to get out on the right foot with the Redskins and has already done some great community work. Guice was inspired by his best friends mother who successfully underwent cancer treatment at the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center in Baton Rouge. He was so moved that he decided to raise money for the center and was able to raise over $21,000 for the cause.

“I just wanted to donate so they could do more research,” Guice said via Redskins.com. “I just feel like there’s more and more you can always do to help find a better cure, or just keep finding little things by little things to find a cure for cancer.”

Individuals who donated specific amounts were given prizes or entered into drawing for prizes. A small five dollar donation got a game playing Fortnite, or if you donated $100 or more, you could win tickets to the Redskins season opener against the New Orleans Saints. Guice said that his goal was to raise $5,000, but when the donations kept pouring in, he kept raising the goal ending at over $21,000 going for cancer research.

“At first my goal was $5,000 and every time it got closer and closer to the goal, I just upped the goal,” Guice said. “I got the $5,000 within two hours, so I just upped it every time.”
